12 Chibok Survivors Graduate from AUN

Twelve survivors of the Chibok school abduction are graduating from the American University of Nigeria, symbolizing resilience, recovery, and a hopeful future after years of trauma.

Twelve young women who survived the Chibok school abduction are set to graduate on May 9, 2026, from American University of Nigeria, marking a powerful milestone in their journey of resilience and recovery.

According to a statement by the university’s communications head, Yusuf Mohammed, the achievement represents more than academic success—it is a bold statement of identity, dignity, and hope after years of hardship. Once taken from their school in Borno State, the women will now walk proudly as graduates who rebuilt their lives through determination and strong support systems.

Some of the students expressed a mix of disbelief and pride ahead of their graduation. One student shared that she is not just earning a degree but becoming the person she once thought she could never be, while another emphasized that their journey proves that darkness cannot overcome resilience.

Another graduate reflected on how they arrived at the university broken but found strength, healing, and the courage to dream again. Now, their ambitions include careers in development, healthcare, and other fields aimed at making meaningful impact.

The transformation of the women was made possible through a strong support network involving the Nigerian government, private individuals, and the university community. The institution provided tailored academic programs, counseling, healthcare, and mentorship to help them recover from trauma and rebuild their education.

The university’s president, DeWayne Frazier, described their graduation as a significant global moment, praising their courage and resilience. He noted that their success highlights what can be achieved when education, compassion, and community support come together.

Their story stands as a powerful symbol of hope, showing that even after unimaginable adversity, a brighter future is possible.
