Their story, from preparation to victory, captivated their school and hometown in Panjim, Goa, illustrating the power of perseverance and mentorship.
The Progress High School buzzed with activity as Maya and Usha, along with their team, prepared for the regional and national rounds of the robotics competition, which aimed at solving real-world challenges aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Despite initial hesitations, particularly Usha’s reluctance to perform on stage, she overcame her fears under Maya’s guidance. Their efforts paid off as they advanced through the competition stages, ultimately leading to Usha’s selection for the international round in Dubai.
Usha’s background added another layer of inspiration to her victory. Coming from a humble family, her father a tile fitter and her mother a homemaker, Usha’s passion for robotics was sparked by a school camp organized by Maya. The competition required intense preparation, and Usha diligently balanced her schoolwork, training, and other activities. She meticulously practiced with the robot, Quarky, designed to perform 11 tasks in five minutes, which tested her skills in various technical and problem-solving aspects.
The journey to Dubai was also marked by financial and logistical challenges. Maya spearheaded a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for Usha’s trip, highlighting her story and the financial hurdles her family faced. Obtaining the necessary travel documents proved difficult, with issues in Usha’s birth certificate and her parents’ lack of a marriage certificate complicating matters. Despite these setbacks, Maya’s relentless efforts ensured that Usha was ready to compete internationally.
In the end, Usha’s victory was a testament to the relentless support and guidance of her teacher, the resilience of a young girl determined to succeed, and the collective effort of their community. Maya’s own son, who also competed in the junior category, witnessed his mother’s dedication to her students, underscoring the selfless nature of her commitment.
