A 70-year-old Nigerian woman, Onikeoke Mabel Ayodele Ayodeji has shared her journey of overcoming adversity to achieve a master’s degree.
Hailing from Ondo State, Nigeria, Ayodele’s life took a remarkable turn when she left her hometown in 1967, seeking educational opportunities her parents couldn’t afford to provide.
Due to some financial constraint, her educational journey came to an unexpected halt after completing her Modern 3 as it was called then.
She couldn’t afford watching her friends further their education while she was lagged behind. In an effort to make ends meet, she made the courageous decision to become a salesgirl.
Despite the hardships and maltreatment she faced, she persevered, never losing sight of her dream to further her education.
Recounting a moment that fueled her determination.
“One day, my teacher came to class when I was in Modern school and asked us to prepare for an impromptu test. After he had marked my script, he commended me and said he wished I’d become a professor by the time he returns in 10 years’ time!” she shared.
