Graduates from the University of Ibadan’s College of Medicine and Dentistry face significant professional setbacks due to a two-year delay in receiving their certificates, with 133 out of 208 still waiting despite numerous complaints and provisional licenses expiring.

Graduates from the University of Ibadan’s (UI) College of Medicine and Dentistry are facing significant delays in receiving their certificates, severely hindering their professional progress.
The class of 2022, comprising 208 graduates in medicine, surgery, and dentistry, has been particularly affected, with only 75 certificates issued, leaving 133 graduates in limbo.
One frustrated graduate revealed that many peers have engaged in unofficial communications with university staff, but repeated promises of resolution have not been fulfilled. “They keep asking us to return the following month,” he stated.
Upon graduation, the students received provisional licenses to complete their one-year housemanship, but obtaining permanent licenses from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) requires their university certificates.
“Despite completing our housemanship in December last year, getting our certificates has been a prolonged issue,” the graduate added.
In response, the graduates of the MBBS 2022 and BDS 2023 classes wrote a letter to the university management on July 11, 2024, outlining the challenges caused by the certificate delay and its impact on their career progression.
One graduate emphasized, “UI is just wasting our lives,” citing missed opportunities for further studies and negative effects on mental health.
Despite these grievances, the University of Ibadan’s management has yet to address the issue, leaving many graduates uncertain about their professional futures.
