The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has called for immediate reforms to address Nigeria’s alarming university admission shortfall, where only 22-25% of the 2 million annual applicants secure admission—leaving over 75% stranded.
Speaking in Abuja with Vice Chancellors of Federal Universities, Dr. Alausa outlined bold measures to bridge this gap. Key among these is the compulsory adoption of hybrid learning by 2025 and integration of Anthology Blackboard technology by year-end, with universities’ access to ICT intervention funds tied to compliance. He emphasized leveraging technology, particularly in conflict-prone regions where physical attendance is disrupted.
Beyond technology, the Minister urged institutions to prioritize specialized education to close the skills gap. He also proposed public-private collaborations to expand student housing outside campuses.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, clarified that JAMB only enforces quotas set by regulatory bodies, particularly for professional courses like law and medicine. He echoed the need for urgent policy restructuring.
Committee of Vice Chancellors Chairman, Prof. Tanko Yusuf, highlighted chronic underfunding, poor pay, and outdated curricula as key challenges. He stressed the need for better funding, curriculum modernization, and vocational education to ease overcrowding.
Dr. Alausa made it clear: these reforms are not optional, marking a decisive push toward modernizing Nigeria’s higher education.
