Cursory: Five suspected Yahoo Boys, have been arrested in Bauchi state for allegedly kidnapping a 400-level student of Bauchi State University. The suspects held the victim hostage over a dispute regarding the sharing of $3,800 obtained from an internet fraud transaction. The victim was rescued unharmed after soldiers intercepted the stolen vehicle used by the suspects. Unfortunately, one of the suspects died while attempting to escape.
The Bauchi State Police have apprehended five individuals suspected of being involved in internet fraud, commonly referred to as Yahoo Boys.
The suspects are accused of kidnapping Ojo Robi David, a 400-level student studying Science Laboratory Technology at Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG).
The motive behind the abduction was reportedly related to the distribution of $3,800 obtained through a fraudulent online transaction.
In a statement released by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, it was disclosed that the suspects were found in possession of eight mobile phones, a knife, and various types of charms.
Wakil said: “The suspects kidnapped Ojo Tobi David, 23, a 400-level student of SLT Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG), from Federal Low-Cost Housing Estate of Azare Town, Bauchi State.
“After kidnapping the victim, the suspects snatched a Toyota Camry 2010 with Reg No. KYW-925-SB, took their victim inside and swiftly headed to the Misau Road Azare.
“On receipt of the distress call, the soldiers stationed at the Azare/Misau military checkpoint responded immediately and intercepted the stolen vehicle alongside the suspects.
Meanwhile, the victim was rescued unhurt.“However, one of the suspects, Damilola James, of Turum area, Bauchi, fell while trying to escape. He was taken to Federal Medical Center (FMC) Azare for immediate medical attention but was certified dead by a medical doctor.
“A preliminary investigation at Divisional Police Headquarters Azare indicates that the crux of the matter was a result of a misunderstanding over the sharing of 3800 US dollars obtained in a Yahoo transaction.
“The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Bauchi for further investigation.”
