Alena Maze, a 35-year-old mother of seven, has shattered records by becoming the first black woman to achieve a PhD in Survey Methodology.
Renowned for her YouTube presence, Maze proudly announced her groundbreaking achievement, marking a milestone in academia and diversity.
Her journey to this pinnacle began with a passion for mathematics and health, driving her to pursue a career as a survey statistician, aiming to foster inclusivity in research methodologies.


After attaining her bachelor’s degree in Pure Mathematics from Bowie State University and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from Georgetown University, Maze embarked on her doctoral quest at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Reflecting on her academic specialization, Maze eloquently explained her role as a Survey Statistician, delving into the intricate mathematics behind survey methodologies, vital for refining targeted treatments like diabetes management for specific demographics.
Beyond academia, Maze shared a heartwarming tale of love and perseverance with PopSugar, recounting her serendipitous romance with her Korean-American husband, Joe Lee. Their journey, marked by separations and reunions, culminated in a vibrant multicultural family, chronicled through their vlogs.
