According to the DAILY POST, thousands of students blocked the entrance to the main campus as early as 6:30 am, preventing lecturers, students, and staff from entering the school.
A lecturer, speaking anonymously, mentioned that he was stuck outside the gate for over an hour. He explained that the students were protesting their inability to register for courses and the N20,000 late registration penalty.
“The students became worried when it became clear that the management wouldn’t heed their pleas. Consequently, they locked the school’s entrance, barring both students and staff from entering this morning,” the lecturer said.
“The protest was significant, with students blocking the gate as early as 6:30 am. They have been facing network issues while trying to register for their courses, and today is the last day for registration. Any student who fails to register today will have to pay a N20,000 penalty,” he added.
He noted that the protesters were primarily from the faculties of law and management science. Additionally, he claimed that many students had been transferred to other departments through a newly introduced proceeding list, which they argued was against university regulations.
In response, Acting Registrar Mr. Ambrose Odiase issued a memorandum stating that the university’s Senate had scheduled an emergency meeting to address the protest. The notice, dated June 6, 2024, set the meeting for 1:00 pm.
“I am directed to convey an emergency meeting of the Senate today, 6th June 2024, to address matters of urgent importance, including the issue of course registration and the proceeding list for law students. The meeting is mandatory for all members,” the memorandum stated.
At the time of reporting, the Senate had extended the registration deadline by two weeks.
