Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has criticized the previous administration for neglecting the education sector. Speaking in Kano while declaring a State of Emergency in Education, Gov. Yusuf accused the former administration of selling public schools and converting some into private shops.
With the backing of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Gov. Yusuf has vowed to undertake substantial reforms to rejuvenate the education sector, emphasizing its vital role in societal progress. He also highlighted the serious issue of out-of-school children, noting that nearly a million lack access to education.
The governor is determined to revive Kano’s education system, which was once exemplary but has suffered due to neglect.
“My administration is committed to making education a top priority and creating a lasting legacy for future generations. Over 4.7 million pupils are forced to sit on bare floors to learn, and 400 schools have only one teacher for all classes and subjects,” he said.
Gov. Yusuf also emphasized the severe lack of basic teaching tools, inadequate resources, and outdated equipment faced by teachers and students. Additionally, many schools suffer from insufficient water and sanitation facilities.
