A young Nigerian woman, Chisom Ibeanusi, has achieved a remarkable feat by graduating with a first-class Nursing degree from the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.
Chisom, a mother of one, began her nursing career in Nigeria, earning a Diploma in Nursing from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH). She then pursued a bachelor’s degree in Nursing at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), but her studies were disrupted by the 2020 academic union strike, leading her to leave the program.
Fortunately, Chisom had the opportunity to move to the United Kingdom with her husband, Dr. Ejike Ibeanusi, who promised her that she would earn her nursing degree from an international university. Determined to achieve her dream, Chisom enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of Derby.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including balancing a full-time job, motherhood, and her academic responsibilities, Chisom’s hard work and dedication paid off. She graduated with first-class honors in Nursing Science. Reflecting on her success, she credited God and her husband for their support.
“I owe this achievement to my lovely husband, who not only kept his promise of ensuring I get back to obtain a degree in Nursing overseas but also managed our home, taking care of our baby and supporting me despite his own busy schedule as a medical doctor,” Chisom said. She added that her husband had been her backbone, often helping with research and providing resources, along with support from friends.
Chisom’s passion for nursing was driven by her desire to care for the vulnerable. “I chose this profession because I wanted to care for people. Helping people through their vulnerability to become fit and well again is something I enjoy,” she explained.
Reflecting on her interrupted studies in Nigeria, Chisom acknowledged the challenge but felt determined to pursue her dreams abroad.
“I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I felt I could do it. I have a strong and courageous partner who helped me through this journey abroad to achieve this degree. Even though it’s been busy with ups and downs, we stood our ground to achieve it and more. Achieving this first-class degree is a stepping stone for me,” she said.
