Ewura Adams Karim, a determined Ghanaian, overcame four years of scholarship rejections to win the Mandela Washington Fellowship in 2024, earning multiple degrees along the way and emphasizing resilience and perseverance as the keys to his success.


Ewura Adams Karim, a determined Ghanaian, triumphed after years of perseverance, securing a prestigious scholarship after four years of rejections. Ewura finally won the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders in 2024, having applied for the scholarship annually since 2019. Reflecting on his journey, he celebrated his success and shared his story of resilience.
While completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship, Ewura also participated in the Leadership in Civic Engagement Program at Louisiana State University in the United States. His academic journey began at the University of Ghana, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He then pursued a master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). Recently, he achieved a second master’s degree in International Law and Legal Studies from the University of Ghana.
Throughout his journey, Ewura faced numerous setbacks but never wavered in his commitment to his goals. In 2014, despite losing the chance to become president of the Ashanti Regional Student Representative Council, he was later elected Vice President and earned recognition as the Most Hardworking and Outstanding Regional Executive. Similarly, in 2018, he lost the University of Ghana SRC Presidential election but became head of the legislature after winning the General Assembly election. In 2019, he was named the Most Influential Student at the University of Ghana.
One of his significant achievements came when he was selected for the Obama Africa Leaders Program, joining 32 young leaders from across the continent. Despite facing various challenges, including a life-threatening accident and losing his job after a protest in 2023, Ewura remained steadfast in his pursuit of success. Even with a canceled flight threatening his Mandela Washington Fellowship interview, his determination helped him overcome the odds.
Ewura credits his achievements to resilience and faith, encouraging other scholars to embrace adversity and grow stronger in the face of challenges. He believes perseverance is key to success.
