The University of Calabar (UNICAL) gains recognition as its first female Students Union Government (SUG) President, H.E. Comr. Blessing Alims, was honored during the closeout ceremony of the Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL) Nigeria Project.

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) celebrated a historic moment as its first female Students Union Government (SUG) President, H.E. Comr. Blessing Alims, was honored during the closeout ceremony of the Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL) Nigeria Project.

The event, held at the Calabar International Convention Center (CICC), was a collaborative effort involving Global Affairs Canada, ActionAid Nigeria, and Gender and Development Action (GADA).

The five-year WVL Nigeria Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, aimed to dismantle barriers to gender equality and empower women and girls by providing financial and technical support.

It focused on aiding local feminist and women’s rights organizations in Nigeria, addressing challenges in policy, legislation, service provision, and harmful social norms.

As a project beneficiary, Comr. Blessing Alims was invited to deliver a goodwill message at the ceremony. She expressed her gratitude to the organizers and highlighted the critical role of empowering women and girls in Nigeria.

“This project has been a game-changer for many women and girls in Nigeria, including myself, and I am proud to be part of a generation of women who are breaking barriers and shaping the future of our country,” said Comr. Blessing Alims.

The event marked a significant milestone in the pursuit of gender equality in Nigeria, with the University of Calabar proudly associated with this initiative.

The recognition of Comr. Blessing Alims underscores the progress in promoting women’s leadership and the positive impact of such projects on the university community and beyond.
