Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua made history as the first black woman to earn a Ph.D. in Cybernetics, with a focus on using her expertise to improve lives and create positive change, while currently serving as an Engineering Professor at Ohlone College and leading the Smart Manufacturing Technology Program.

A brilliant Nigerian woman named Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua has made history as the first black woman to earn a Doctorate in Cybernetics in the world.
Rose, a professor of Engineering, broke a new world record by becoming the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in Cybernetics after she bagged the degree from the University of Reading, United Kingdom.
Her journey towards this historic achievement began with her undergraduate studies at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
She then proceeded to obtain a master’s degree in Mobile Satellite and Communications Engineering at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom before enrolling for the doctorate in Cybernetics.
Cybernetics is the science of how information is communicated in machines and pieces of electronic equipment, compared with how information is communicated in the brain and nervous system.
She earned the PhD under the supervision of her first Ph.D. supervisor, Prof. Kevin Warwick, the first human Cyborg (an individual with artificial parts) in the world.
Growing up in Nigeria, Rose discovered her love for engineering and technology but noticed that the culture did not encourage much education for women, especially in male-dominated fields like engineering. However, she used this belief to motivate herself and gained several degrees in Engineering and related courses. With a career spanning over two decades in engineering and STEM education, Rose’s expertise extends across the United States and Europe.
Rose said her focus is to improve people’s lives through her work; hence she chose the field of cybernetics, which gave her the opportunity to design technologies that benefit society and humans.
She mentioned that although she broke a record, her initial focus is to make a positive change in the world. Currently, she is an Engineering Professor at Ohlone College in Fremont, California, in the United States.
She is also the Founding Program Lead of the College’s Smart Manufacturing Technology Program, which collaborated with Tesla in January to expand the electric automaker’s Employee Education Assistance (EEA) program.
