Twelve-year-old Viemens Bamfo, has become the youngest student ever admitted to the University of Ghana, and is set to earn a degree in Public Administration by age 16.
Twelve-year-old Viemens Bamfo has made history by becoming the youngest student ever to gain admission to the University of Ghana in Accra, where he is on track to earn a degree in Public Administration by age 16. Among nearly 3,000 students who enrolled at the University of Ghana in 2019, Bamfo stands out as the youngest.
His father, Robert Bamfo, revealed to BBC that he had been personally tutoring his son for the past three years in various subjects, which enabled Viemens to excel in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private students and secure university admission. Due to financial constraints, Bamfo was homeschooled by his father, who also provided home tuition for his older brother, Edwin Bamfo, an Environmental Scientist who graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at age 20.
Bamfo explained that their education approach combined the Cambridge and WASSCE syllabi, with an emphasis on dictionary skills and pronunciation as foundational learning. He also incorporates phonetics and Latin into the curriculum, avoiding traditional note-taking for sciences, and adapting lessons to his children’s interests through associative teaching methods.
Bamfo plans to pursue Public Administration through the University of Ghana’s Distance Education School and has set his sights on becoming the President of Ghana by age 40. He is passionate about studying constitutional law, political systems, management principles, economics, and accounting, with the aim of making Ghana a truly independent nation.
Reflecting on his son’s accomplishments, Bamfo expressed pride and a lack of surprise, citing his investment of time and energy in equipping his son with the necessary tools to excel. He emphasized that he has always encouraged his son to strive beyond mediocrity and aim to be an outlier, a philosophy rooted in hard work and determination.
