Thieves Target MAPOLY Students, Demand $100 in Cryptocurrency for Stolen Devices

Thieves targeting MAPOLY students in Abeokuta steal devices and demand $100 in cryptocurrency for their return, leaving Telegram contacts for victims to arrange payments.

A thief or group of thieves has become a growing concern for students and residents of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, following a series of break-ins targeting personal devices. The culprits are reported to steal phones, laptops, and other gadgets, later demanding payments in cryptocurrency for the return of the stolen items.

The situation came to light through a social media post detailing the thieves’ activities around the MAPOLY area. According to the post, the thieves break into students’ rooms, seize gadgets, and then leave a note with instructions for the victims to contact them via Telegram. Once contacted, they demand $100 or more, depending on the value of the stolen device, with payment required in cryptocurrency through a provided link.

The post reads:
“There is a thief or gang of thieves operating in the student areas of MAPOLY, Abeokuta. They break into rooms, steal devices, and leave behind a Telegram handle for the victims to reach out if they want their items back.”

The message further explains:
“After contacting them, they demand a cryptocurrency payment of $100 or more, depending on the gadget’s worth. Upon receiving payment, they provide photos of the location and instructions on when and where the items can be recovered.”

In response to these incidents, local authorities have allocated resources to track down the individuals responsible for these thefts.

Amid efforts to curb the situation, a social media user reported that one suspect had been captured, sharing a video that revealed the thief’s identity.
