Gabriel Nartey, who worked night shifts as a security guard to fund his education, overcame financial struggles and homelessness to graduate with a Second Class Upper in Banking and Finance from the University of Ghana.

Gabriel Nartey, a resilient young African man, has triumphed over adversity to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Banking and Finance from the University of Ghana, Accra.
Determined to achieve his dreams, Gabriel worked night shifts as a security guard from his first year until midway through his third year, using his earnings to pay for accommodation and school expenses. Despite attending classes and writing exams with little sleep, he remained committed to his education.
However, his struggles intensified when he lost his job, leaving him uncertain about how to continue. Undeterred, he found another job as a part-time teacher, allowing him to stay in school. When he eventually moved to campus, he faced homelessness, spending nights in a lecture hall with no clear path forward.
Even amidst these hardships, Gabriel took on a leadership role as the Organizing Secretary of the Business House Junior Common Room while balancing work and academics. Though there were moments he felt like giving up, he remained focused on his goal.
Towards the end of his university journey, financial aid from Axis Pensions Trust Ltd., the University of Ghana Sponsorship Scheme, Christ Assembly Worldwide, and generous individuals gave him the support he needed to concentrate fully on his studies.
Against all odds, Gabriel graduated with a Second Class Upper, a milestone he considers a major achievement.
“I made it. I may not have hit my initial target, but graduating with a Second Class Upper is a win I will always be proud of,” he shared.
Encouraging others facing difficulties, he advised: “Keep pushing, trust God, and look beyond the struggles. Your best days will come, and your story will inspire someone else.”
