The University of Uyo will award first-class honors to 174 of its 12,450 graduates during a combined convocation, recognizing distinguished alumni and professors while addressing challenges such as funding and staffing.
The University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State will confer first-class honors on 174 students during its upcoming combined convocation ceremony on Saturday, according to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nyaudo Ndaeyo.
At a pre-convocation briefing, Prof. Ndaeyo shared that the convocation, which marks the 29th and 30th graduations, includes a total of 12,450 graduates: 1,167 postgraduates (303 PhDs, 608 Master’s degrees, and 246 Postgraduate Diplomas) and 10,835 undergraduates.
The breakdown for the 2020/2021 academic year includes 56 first-class bachelor’s degrees among 4,823 graduates, while the 2021/2022 session has 118 first-class degrees among 6,012 graduates. Additionally, there are 411 diploma and 37 certificate recipients.
In recognition of distinguished achievements, three eminent Nigerians—Chief Effiong Afiakure, Mrs. Halima Zakaria, and Dr. Itanwan James—will receive honorary degrees, while Prof. Akpan Ekpo will be awarded an honorary Professor Emeritus degree, and Distinguished Professor titles will go to three UNIUYO professors: Prof. Enefiok Essien, Prof. Godfrey Udoh, and Prof. Essien Urua.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted university milestones and challenges under his tenure, including issues with equipment theft, limited funding, land encroachment, and staffing shortages due to federal employment restrictions.
