From 2.21 GPA to Academic Excellence: Nigerian Student Wins 14 Scholarships to Top Universities in the US and Europe

John Eso transformed his academic journey from a struggling 2.21 GPA student to graduating with honors, securing 14 scholarships to top universities in the US and Europe, and earning a fully funded PhD offer through perseverance, resilience, and relentless hard work.

John Eso, a Nigerian student, has defied the odds by transforming his academic performance from a 2.21 GPA in his first year at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), to graduating with honors and securing 14 scholarships to prestigious universities across the US and Europe. His journey is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to self-improvement.

John’s academic journey began with significant setbacks. Despite his ambition and clear vision, his weak foundation in mathematics and physics negatively impacted his performance as an Agricultural and Environmental Engineering student. Determined to improve, he:

• Dedicated long hours to studying

• Attended multiple tutorials

• Sought help from top-performing classmates

• Hired a private math instructor

• Used YouTube tutorials for additional learning

Despite his hard work, his progress was slow, and he struggled to move from D’s to C’s, while his peers excelled with A’s. However, he remained determined, and over time, his persistence paid off.

Through consistent effort, John gradually improved his grades—transitioning from a D student to a C student, then to a B student, and finally to an A student. He excelled in Engineering Mathematics and other difficult courses, even achieving a perfect 5.00 GPA in one semester before ultimately graduating with a Second Class Upper (Honors) degree.

John aspired to integrate Engineering, Technology, and Business to develop innovative solutions, which led him to pursue graduate studies abroad.

In Fall 2023, he applied to several top universities, including New York University, Princeton University, and Johns Hopkins University. While he faced multiple rejections, he secured a 50% merit-based scholarship and a Graduate Research Assistantship from Johns Hopkins University.

In Spring 2024, he applied again, targeting the University of Florida and the University of Virginia, but was rejected once more. One of his toughest moments came when a professor at Florida, whose research aligned perfectly with his interests, suddenly stopped responding to his emails.

Unwilling to give up, John refined his approach for Fall 2025, conducting in-depth research on 152 Civil Engineering programs in the US and sending out over 500 cold emails to professors, graduate coordinators, and department heads.

His persistence yielded incredible results—he received multiple fully funded PhD offers from renowned institutions, including:

Johns Hopkins University

Rice University

University of Southern California

Ohio State University

Texas A&M University

University of Hawaii

By Spring 2025, John had significantly strengthened his academic profile, publishing four research papers, earning 20+ certifications, and gaining extensive research, teaching, and professional experience.

His hard work and resilience finally paid off when he secured a fully funded PhD offer from North Carolina State University (NCSU), USA.

Reflecting on his journey, John expressed deep gratitude to his professors, family, and friends who supported him through his most challenging moments. He acknowledged the setbacks, the countless rejections, and the tireless efforts required to achieve his dreams.

His advice to others facing similar struggles:

“Success is not just about talent—it’s about showing up, putting in the work, and refusing to give up. Keep pushing forward, keep failing, and one day, success will come.”
