Blind Vice Principal and Wife Struggle to Teach 363 Students in Abia School

A blind vice principal and his wife, along with the school principal, struggle to teach 363 students at an Abia school due to a severe teacher shortage, prompting government intervention and recent WAEC approval following renovation efforts.

At Ozuitem Community Secondary School in Abia State, a visually impaired vice principal and his wife are among the only three individuals responsible for teaching all 363 students due to a severe shortage of teachers.

Education activist and CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, highlighted the dire situation after witnessing the blind vice principal conducting a lesson, revealing that students often attend school without receiving proper education.

Despite these challenges, recent renovation efforts by Onyia’s organization have led to the school being approved as a West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examination center, offering hope for improved learning conditions.

In response to the broader educational crisis, Abia State Governor Alex Otti declared a state of emergency in the education sector, implementing policies such as increasing the retirement age of teachers to 65 years and ensuring equal salary payments.

Governor Otti also emphasized his commitment to improving the student-teacher ratio, stating that his administration will prioritize hiring more teachers to create a better learning environment across the state.
