Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), has confirmed the sudden death of final-year Mechanical Engineering student Nwachukwu Omiko, who collapsed during a football match, prompting condolences from the university and a renewed call for students to prioritize their health and well-being.

allscho Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), has officially confirmed the untimely death of Nwachukwu Omiko, a final-year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who tragically collapsed while participating in a friendly football match on the university campus. According to the statement issued by the institution’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Ubadire Agua, the incident occurred suddenly on Wednesday, prompting immediate action by his fellow students who attempted to resuscitate him before notifying the University Health Services.

Omiko was quickly transported in the university’s oxygen-equipped ambulance to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia, but despite the rapid response and medical intervention, he was sadly pronounced dead on arrival. The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the university community, with students and faculty expressing grief and disbelief.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, conveyed his profound condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues at the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. He described Omiko’s death as a painful loss not only to the university but also to the nation, given his academic potential and promising future.

In response to the tragedy, the university management has called on students to make use of the institution’s medical services upon resumption and to be mindful of their health conditions, especially before engaging in physically demanding activities. The administration also reiterated its commitment to student welfare and pledged to strengthen preventive healthcare awareness on campus to avert similar incidents in the future.
