How JAMB Really Marks Your Exam — And the Smartest Way to Prepare!

From Questions to Scores: How JAMB Calculates Your Result!

🎉 Hey champs! It’s your favourite education blog back at it again!

Today, we’re diving into something so many of you have been curious about — JAMB’s MARKING SCHEME. Yep, that mystery behind how those JAMB scores magically appear after the exam. Don’t worry, this won’t be a long read, but we promise you’ll walk away feeling like a JAMB expert!

📚 First Things First: Your Subject Combo Matters!

Every JAMB candidate is expected to register for 4 subjects — and no, you don’t just pick your favourites like it’s a snack bar. 😅
Your subject combo must match the requirements of the course you want to study.

For example, if you’re eyeing Medicine and Surgery, you’ll likely be choosing:

  • Use of English (compulsory)
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Chemistry

So before you go choosing subjects just because you “like” them, check what’s required for your dream course!

🧠 Study Smart, Not Just Hard!

No matter your course, you’ve gotta prepare like a champ. The competition is real, and there’s no shortcut to smashing JAMB except PREPARATION. With that said, let’s unwrap how JAMB actually marks your script.

🔍 How Many Questions Are There?

You’ll be answering 180 questions in total — all in just 2 hours. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Use of English: 60 questions
  • Other 3 Subjects: 40 questions each

That’s 60 + 40 + 40 + 40 = 180 questions. Simple math, yeah?

🏆 What’s the Highest Score?

The max you can score in JAMB is 400. No more, no less.
And guess what? No negative marking! 🎉
So if you get a question wrong, no wahala — you just won’t earn the mark for that question, but you won’t lose marks either.

✍️ How Are Marks Shared?

Now here’s where it gets interesting! Not all questions are treated equally — especially in Use of English. Here’s how it works:

👉 Use of English (60 questions)

Different sections, different marks!

  • Comprehension Passage: 3 marks each
  • Cloze Passage: 2 marks each
  • Recommended Novel Questions: 1 mark each
  • Sentence Interpretation & Antonyms: 2 marks each
  • Synonyms & Sentence Completion: 1 mark each

👉 Other 3 Subjects (40 questions each)

Each question here is worth 2.5 marks. That’s 40 x 2.5 = 100 marks per subject.

So in total:

  • English = 100 marks
  • Subject 2 = 100 marks
  • Subject 3 = 100 marks
  • Subject 4 = 100 marks
    Grand Total = 400 Marks

💡 Final Advice:

All four subjects carry equal weight, so don’t ignore any of them. Study all with equal seriousness. Whether it’s Literature or Physics, Government or Chemistry — JAMB doesn’t play favourites!
