Maud Chifamba, a determined Zimbabwean orphan, overcame poverty and loss to earn a bachelor’s degree at 18, a master’s at 20, and a full MBA scholarship to Wharton, becoming a symbol of resilience and academic excellence.
Maud Chifamba, an extraordinary young woman from Zimbabwe, has achieved a remarkable academic journey. She earned her bachelor’s degree at just 18, completed a master’s degree by 20, and secured a fully funded scholarship to pursue an MBA at the prestigious Wharton School of Business in the United States.
Born into poverty, Maud lost her father at age 5 and her mother to cancer at 13. Despite these tragic circumstances, she refused to let hardship define her future. Her early education was disrupted, but her intelligence shone through when she was mistakenly given a higher-level exam—and passed with excellence.
Lacking funds for formal schooling, Maud studied independently and completed her Ordinary Level exams in just two years. Her determination caught the attention of Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Education, which allowed her to sit for her Advanced Level exams. After excelling, she was awarded a $10,000 scholarship to further her studies.
At age 14, Maud was admitted to the University of Zimbabwe to study Accountancy, becoming one of the youngest students in the university’s history. She graduated at 18, then earned a Master of Science in Accountancy by 20.
“After Grade 7, there was no school for me. In my community, the norm was early marriage. I hated the idea and was motivated to change my destiny,” Maud said.
Driven to understand why her family’s business attempts had failed, she chose accounting. She became a certified Public Accountant and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe by age 23.
In 2018, Maud was awarded a $155,000 scholarship to study for an MBA in Finance at Wharton, proving that resilience and brilliance can overcome even the harshest beginnings.
