JAMB Declares FUTA Graduate’s Admission Invalid Due to Missing Records

JAMB has declared the admission of FUTA graduate Basola Jamiu Owodunni invalid, stating his details are missing from its official records, despite his graduation and NYSC application, prompting investigations, detention, and conflicting claims between the board and the university.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated it did not authorize the admission of Basola Jamiu Owodunni into the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), citing that his details are absent from the official Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). This follows public claims by Basola, who says JAMB invalidated his university admission seven years after enrollment.

Student’s Journey and Discovery

Basola, who completed a Civil Engineering degree at FUTA in 2024 with a CGPA of 4.41, shared his ordeal on social media. According to him, he wrote the UTME in 2017 and was offered admission the following year. However, during final clearance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilization, his name was flagged as having received a “fake admission.”

“When I checked the JAMB matriculation list, it stated my admission was invalid,” he explained.

Attempts to log into his JAMB portal failed, prompting a visit to the board’s office.

Arrest and Interrogation

Basola reported that officials at the JAMB office suggested he be handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further questioning. He was subsequently detained by DSS and police authorities for several hours before being released after a friend’s intervention.

He also disclosed that FUTA’s admissions office provided documents to law enforcement supporting his claim that his admission followed standard procedures. A report was allegedly sent to the Commissioner of Police in Abuja. However, as of his latest update, JAMB had not taken further action.

JAMB’s Response

Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser, issued a statement clarifying that:

“JAMB does not offer or initiate admission. It only approves candidates who are properly recommended through CAPS by accredited institutions.”

The board insists that Basola’s name does not appear in its records, and the document he holds was not generated by their system.

“He remains unknown to JAMB as far as admission is concerned,” the board added, urging him to reveal the source of the document he presented.

Benjamin further emphasized that individual circumstances—such as being an orphan or coming from a disadvantaged background—cannot be used to bypass admission protocols.

Basola Seeks Intervention

Basola said he reached out to multiple officials within FUTA, including the registrar, vice-chancellor, and the chair of the admissions committee, asking for assistance.

“I feel helpless, and the university doesn’t seem to know what steps to take either,” he lamented.

JAMB’s Final Position

Despite its current stance, JAMB stated that it is open to supporting Basola—if it is proven that he followed all lawful admission procedures.

“We are committed to protecting candidates’ rights. If Mr. Owodunni is found to have complied with the law, we will assist him fully,” the board concluded.
