World Bank Invests N180b to Address Almajirai and Out-of-School Children in Northern Nigeria

Sokoto State Commissioner for Religious Affair, Sheikh Jabir Sani Maihulla has announced that the World Bank is set on investing $120 million (~N180b) to tackle the issues of Almajirai and out-of-school children in northern Nigeria.

Sheikh Jabir Sani Maihulla, Sokoto State Commissioner for Religious Affairs, announced that the World Bank is investing $120 million (~180 billion Naira) to tackle the issues of Almajirai and out-of-school children in northern Nigeria.

He emphasized that the Almajiri crisis has outgrown the capacities of both state and federal governments, necessitating collaborative efforts for a viable solution.

Maihulla highlighted the significant World Bank investment aimed at addressing these challenges. He noted that even the complete allocation of state resources would be insufficient to resolve the issue without the involvement of other donor agencies, including international organizations.

In Sokoto, three standard Almajiri schools have been established. One is in the Gagi area under federal government management, while the other two, located in Dange Shuni and Wamakko local government areas, are managed by the state Ministry for Religious Affairs.

Maihulla pointed out that these schools are among the most resource-intensive projects of the ministry, providing daily accommodation, meals, and integrated education to the Almajirai.

The state governor has instructed the Ministry for Religious Affairs to work with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to establish additional Almajiri schools to cater to the many out-of-school children.

To support this initiative, the ministry conducted a survey to gather statistics and determine the origins of these children, laying the groundwork for comprehensive educational support.
