University of Abuja Elects First Female Students’ Union President

A 300-level Tourism and Hospitality Management student, Eyamu Oghenenyerovwo Peculiar, has made history as the first woman elected President of the University of Abuja Students’ Union Government, marking a major milestone for female leadership at the institution.

The University of Abuja has recorded a historic milestone with the election of its first female President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG).

Eyamu Oghenenyerovwo Peculiar, a 300-level student in the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, emerged victorious in the 2025/2026 SUG elections, which were conducted through the university’s digital voting platform.

Her election marks the first time a woman has been democratically elected to lead the University’s Students’ Union Government, making it a significant moment in the institution’s history. During her campaign, she contested under the slogan, “Everything Peculiar, Nothing Is Ordinary.”

Reacting to her victory, Peculiar expressed gratitude to God and the students who supported her throughout the election. She described her emergence as more than a personal achievement, saying it represents a victory for young women who aspire to leadership and for students who believe leadership should be based on competence, integrity, character, and service rather than gender.

She noted that the outcome of the election reflects the confidence students have in capable leadership and demonstrates that ability and commitment remain the most important qualities in choosing leaders.

The University of Abuja also congratulated the newly elected president and wished her a successful tenure as she prepares to lead the Students’ Union Government during the 2025/2026 academic session.

Her emergence is expected to encourage greater participation of female students in campus politics while inspiring more young women to pursue leadership positions within higher institutions across Nigeria. The election has also been widely celebrated as an important step toward greater inclusiveness in student governance.
