JSS 3 Pupil Allegedly Kills Teacher Over Confiscated Cap

A 16-year-old JSS 3 student in Benue State has been arrested for allegedly killing his teacher during a violent confrontation over a confiscated school cap, sparking public outrage and prompting a police investigation.

A Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS 3) student has been taken into police custody in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State for allegedly killing a teacher following a heated altercation over a confiscated school cap.

The tragic incident unfolded on Thursday at UBE Secondary School, Oju Centre. The student, identified as 16-year-old Friday Ogamude, reportedly confronted his teacher, Mr. Oyibe Oyibe, aged 35, demanding the return of a cap that had been seized in May 2025 for violating school dress codes. The cap had allegedly become a point of contention between the two over time, ultimately culminating in violence.

Eyewitnesses stated that what began as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated when the student physically attacked the teacher during the confrontation. Mr. Oyibe, described by colleagues as a dedicated and disciplined educator, reportedly collapsed at the scene due to injuries sustained during the altercation.

He was immediately rushed to Amara Hospital in Oju by staff members and bystanders. Unfortunately, upon arrival at the medical facility, he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty. The cause of death is yet to be formally established, but his remains have been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Oju for autopsy and further examination.

In a statement released to the press, the Benue State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect and labeled the incident as “deeply troubling and tragic.” The police added that preliminary investigations are ongoing and promised a thorough inquiry into the circumstances that led to the violent outburst. Authorities also assured the public that all necessary legal steps will be taken and justice will be served accordingly.

The community has been left in shock, with many parents and educators calling for increased attention to student behavior, discipline, and mental health in schools. The state Ministry of Education is expected to issue a formal response in the coming days, as questions arise about school safety and student-teacher relations.
