“Why I Avoided Relationships in University” – UNIPORT’s Best Graduating Student, Victory Abanjo

Victory Abanjo, UNIPORT’s best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.89, attributed her academic success to self-discipline, solo study methods, full class attendance, and avoiding romantic distractions, while also founding a youth counselling platform, The Talkspace, to support young people through mental health challenges.

Victory Abanjo, the overall best graduating student from the University of Port Harcourt with a CGPA of 4.89, has opened up about the discipline, strategies, and life choices that helped her achieve academic excellence.

In a candid interview, Victory shared that her approach to studying was deeply personal. Instead of following conventional advice to join study groups or adopt a fixed reading schedule, she discovered early on that she performed best studying alone and on her own terms.

“I didn’t follow the day or night reader categories. I read whenever I felt the urge, and when I did, I would put in at least three solid hours,” she said.

Rather than cramming under pressure, Victory focused on maximizing moments of genuine interest. She balanced her routine with breaks, social visits, and rest, which allowed her to stay consistent throughout her academic journey.

Another key factor in her success was full class attendance. By being present and engaged in lectures, she reduced the burden of relearning material before exams.

On why she stayed away from romantic relationships, Victory revealed that she ended her last relationship in 200-level to remain focused.

“I realised it wasn’t what I wanted at the time. So, I stayed out of relationships for the rest of my time in school.”

Victory also faced financial struggles in her early years, which she overcame by venturing into VTU (airtime vending) business. By 200-level, her outstanding performance began attracting financial rewards from organisations like the Heart of Grace Foundation.

She studied Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, and believes the field holds promise in Nigeria despite lingering cultural resistance to therapy.

“People here still say, ‘Just pray about it.’ But counselling is essential. It’s gradually gaining ground, especially with Gen Z and growing mental health awareness.”

Victory is also the founder of The Talkspace, a youth-focused counselling platform operating mainly on WhatsApp. Though not yet monetized, the initiative aims to become a full-fledged non-profit supporting teens and young adults.

Looking ahead, she plans to specialise in industrial psychology, pursue additional certifications, and grow The Talkspace into a professional brand that bridges the gap in mental health support for both individuals and organisations.

To students aspiring to academic excellence, she offers this advice:

“Set clear goals, find what works for you, and stay consistent. Nothing is out of reach if you’re focused and intentional.”

Originally from Akoma in Abavo, Delta State, Victory is 27 years old, the last of three girls, and the daughter of a retired teacher and a farmer.

Now a certified counselling psychologist and virtual assistant, Victory is committed to building a strong, supportive community through her work at The Talkspace and beyond.
