A Nigerian student in Germany was stunned when a professor paused her lecture to personally help her find a classroom, an act that challenged the student’s perception of academic hierarchy and sparked discussions about the rigid culture in Nigerian universities.

A Nigerian student studying in Germany has shared a surprising cultural experience that quickly went viral online. In a video posted to TikTok by user @big_sosap, the young woman recounted how a professor went above and beyond to assist her — something she said was unthinkable in her home country.
According to her, she had gotten lost while trying to locate one of her new classrooms. After several students couldn’t offer clear directions, one advised her to ask a professor nearby. Shocked at the suggestion, she said:
“Ask a professor? I couldn’t believe it. In Nigeria, you don’t just approach a professor. You’ll think twice before even knocking on their door.”
Despite her hesitation, she approached the professor — a woman — and was stunned by what happened next. Rather than simply pointing her in the right direction, the professor left her class and personally walked her around the building until they found the correct room.
“This woman left her own students to help me. I was like, so you people are human beings too? Nigerian professors and doctors, you people are not God o!”
What surprised her even more was how casual the professor was. She later instructed students not to refer to her as “Doctor” or “Professor,” but simply by her first name — Petra.
The student reflected on how deeply this interaction challenged her views about authority and respect in academic environments:
“I need to correct a lot of mentality I carried from Nigeria. I need to start seeing people as human beings, not gods.”
Her story struck a chord with many Nigerians online, sparking conversations about the rigid hierarchies in the Nigerian education system and calls for a more approachable, student-friendly academic culture.
