One of 25 Abducted Kebbi Schoolgirls Escapes

One of the 25 schoolgirls abducted in Kebbi State has managed to escape from her captors.

One of the 25 students kidnapped from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, has managed to escape and return home safely. Authorities confirmed the development on Tuesday, as security agencies and community hunters continue searching for the remaining girls.

According to the school principal, Musa Rabi Magaji, the girl made it back late on Monday and was found to be “safe and sound.” Another student also avoided being taken after running from the attackers during the early-morning assault. Both girls, believed to be in their early teenage years, have since reunited with their families.

Predawn Attack Claims Vice Principal’s Life

The armed men reportedly rode into the school compound on several motorcycles during the early hours of Monday. In the course of the attack, the vice principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, was killed.

His wife, Amina Hassan, recounted the terrifying moment gunmen entered their home:

“Three of them came in and asked my husband, ‘Are you Malam Hassan?’ When he confirmed, they told him, ‘We are here to kill you.’”

Residents said the sound of gunfire echoed across the community. One neighbor, Abdulkarim Abdullahi, explained that he heard the shots from his house and later learned the attackers arrived in large numbers.

Search Efforts Intensify

Security forces responded swiftly after the incident. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, ordered troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA to ramp up intelligence-driven operations, stating that “success is not optional” in rescuing the remaining abducted girls.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris visited the school to address parents and pledged rapid action to ensure the girls’ safe return. President Bola Tinubu also dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to the state on Tuesday evening to meet with affected families, reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to recovering the missing students.

The kidnapping adds to the ongoing insecurity troubling several northern states, where bandits and armed groups continue to target schools, travelers, and rural settlements.

Search operations for the remaining abducted schoolgirls are still ongoing.
