Residents seek help after rainstorm rips off school roof, damages homes

A severe rainstorm tore the roof off a recently inaugurated school in Ado-Ekiti, damaging nearby homes and leaving residents—who have received no government help—appealing to the governor for urgent support.

Residents of the Agric-Olope community in Ado-Ekiti are appealing for urgent assistance after a violent rainstorm tore the roof off St. Francis Catholic Nursery and Primary School and sent it crashing onto nearby houses.

The storm, which occurred during a heavy downpour on Sunday, damaged four buildings and left the affected families struggling to recover. According to the victims, efforts to obtain government aid have been unsuccessful, as officials — including those at the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) — reportedly said the incident was a natural disaster they must handle themselves.

Two women whose homes were severely affected said the storm destroyed their roofs and windows, allowing water to flood their houses and ruin appliances, documents, and other valuables. One of them said they are now unsure how to begin rebuilding.

The residents are calling on Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji to intervene and provide support to help them repair their damaged properties.

A visit to the area revealed concerns that the school building — inaugurated in 2023 — may have been constructed with substandard materials, raising questions about why it failed so quickly.
