Court Delivers Final Verdict in Case of UNIPORT Student’s Death

A court has sentenced UNIPORT student Damian Okoligwe to death for the 2023 murder of his former girlfriend, Justina Otuene, bringing a two-year pursuit of justice for her family to a close.

Two years after the tragic killing of University of Port Harcourt student Justina Otuene, a court has delivered its long-awaited final judgment in the case.

Background: Justina’s Death in 2023

Justina, a 20-year-old 300-level Biochemistry student, was declared missing in late October 2023 after visiting the home of her former boyfriend, Damian Chinaemerem Okoligwe, a 400-level student. Investigators later discovered her dismembered body, leading to Damian’s arrest and nationwide outrage as the case drew widespread calls for justice.

Following multiple hearings, witness testimonies, and a lengthy legal process, the court reached its final decision today.

Damian Sentenced to Death

The court found Damian Okoligwe guilty of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging, the maximum penalty allowed under the law.

The ruling marks the conclusion of a two-year pursuit of justice for Justina and her grieving family.

Prosecution Reacts to Judgment

Speaking after the verdict, lead prosecutor Charles Mbaba expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the ruling brings a sense of closure to Justina’s parents, who lost their only daughter in a gruesome manner.

He added that the judgment should serve as a wake-up call to young people who believe harmful shortcuts can lead to success.

Mbaba said:

“Justice has been done and is seen to be done for Justina Otuene. She was the only daughter of her parents and was gruesomely murdered by Damian Okoligwe in circumstances suggestive of ritual intentions. We hope this judgment allows her soul to rest and discourages youths from pursuing destructive paths in the quest for quick riches.”
