Teacher’s Dedication Earns Guinness World Record

Glenda Akin, an 84-year-old retired teacher from Tennessee, has been awarded a Guinness World Record for longest serving female teacher at a single school. Akin worked at Westmoreland High School for 61 years and 43 days, first as a teacher and later as a librarian.

Akin’s dedication to education has shaped generations of students and left a lasting legacy in her school and community. “I loved my job. I didn’t mind getting up and going to school every day,” she said. The school community became like family to her, especially after her own family passed away.

Throughout her career, Akin witnessed significant social and technological changes, including the introduction of computers and smartphones. She believes students should put away their phones during school hours. Akin also served as a librarian during a time when book bans became a politicized issue, and she opposes censorship in libraries.

Akin has received numerous accolades, including the naming of Westmoreland High School’s library in her honour. She’s taken aback by the attention but remains humble, saying she’s just doing what she loves. Despite retiring, Akin stays active, volunteering at local libraries and playing bingo.

Now, Akin continues to inspire others with her passion for education and community service. “I’m not ready to sit down and give up yet,” she said, showing no signs of slowing down. Her story serves as a testament to the impact one person can have on countless lives.
