Students of Modibbo Adama University have protested a sudden hike in hostel fees from ₦15,000 to ₦60,000, citing financial hardship, lack of improvements, and poor communication from the school.

Students of Modibbo Adama University in Yola, Adamawa State, have voiced strong frustration following a sudden and steep rise in hostel accommodation fees for the new academic session.
According to several students, the cost of accommodation jumped from ₦15,000 to about ₦60,000, representing a fourfold increase. Despite the higher charges, they claim there have been no noticeable improvements in hostel facilities, and the number of occupants per room remains unchanged.
Many students described the development as unfair and financially overwhelming, especially given the current economic challenges. Some also revealed that the increase has led to disagreements with their parents, who initially doubted the authenticity of the new fees.
One student, Gloria, shared that the situation has affected her on multiple levels. As a final-year student already managing several financial responsibilities, she said the new fee is difficult to afford and even exceeds her tuition. She explained that she may need to borrow money just to secure accommodation and appealed to the school management to reconsider the decision.
Another student, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted how the fee hike created tension at home. Her parents believed she was exaggerating the amount to get extra money, and she was eventually advised to use her personal upkeep funds to cover the cost. She noted that the situation has taken an emotional and financial toll on her.
Students also complained that even after paying the increased amount, many have not been given access to the hostels. They expressed confusion over the lack of communication from the school, noting that no official explanation or notice was provided regarding the fee adjustment.
A third student added that paying ₦60,000 for accommodation alongside about ₦40,000 in school fees has been extremely challenging. She explained that despite making the payment, the hostel remains unavailable, forcing her to commute daily from home while still bearing financial burdens.
Overall, the students are calling on the university authorities to clarify the reason behind the increase and to review the fee to make it more affordable. They insist that transparency and consideration are necessary to allow them focus on their studies without added stress.
As of the time of reporting, the institution has not issued any official response to the concerns raised by the students.
