Homeless 22-Year-Old Woman Graduates from U.S. University, Becomes First in Her Family with a Degree

Despite facing homelessness and personal hardship, 22-year-old Rashyah Weatherspoon became the first in her family to graduate from university, earning a degree in Social Work from Ferris State University with the help of a nonprofit support program.

allscho Rashyah Weatherspoon, a resilient 22-year-old woman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, has defied tremendous odds by earning a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Ferris State University, making her the first university graduate in her family despite experiencing homelessness.

Rashyah’s journey was marked by hardship when she relocated for an unpaid internship, eventually living in her car for two weeks without access to stable housing or income. She persevered through emotional family challenges and continued interning while attending school full-time.

“I just kept going because I believed there was more out there for me,” she said.

Her breakthrough came through Covenant House Michigan, a nonprofit that supports homeless youth. They provided her with rent-free housing for four months, giving her the stability she needed to focus on her studies and rebuild her life.

With the help of her case manager, Shelisa Jeffers, and her own unwavering determination, Rashyah completed her degree and emerged as an inspiring example of courage, resilience, and the power of community support.

“Stable housing gave me peace of mind. If I were still living in my car, I don’t think I could have made it,” Rashyah added.
