Police in Ogun State rescued five kidnapped students of Gateway Polytechnic after a coordinated operation that forced the abductors to flee.
Operatives of the police command in Ogun State have successfully rescued five students of Gateway Polytechnic who were abducted by armed men in the Saapade area of Remo North.
The students were reportedly kidnapped late on Monday night, prompting a distress call to officers at the Ipara Division around 10:55 p.m. Security personnel quickly responded and discovered an abandoned ash-coloured Toyota vehicle riddled with bullet holes, along with blood stains, mobile phones, and other personal belongings.
An identity card found at the scene confirmed that the victims were students of the institution, leading to an immediate escalation of the situation and a full rescue operation.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, ordered the deployment of tactical teams and directed an intelligence-driven mission to secure the students’ release. Multiple units—including SWAT, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and other response teams—were mobilised to comb surrounding forests and track the suspects.
The coordinated efforts paid off on April 28, when the five students were rescued unharmed. They were taken for medical care after enduring difficult conditions in captivity.
During the operation, the kidnappers reportedly engaged the police in a gun battle but were overpowered and fled with suspected gunshot injuries. No casualties were recorded among the security operatives.
The police commissioner praised the officers for their professionalism and bravery, noting that the success of the mission was due to effective coordination and intelligence gathering. He also assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, as community cooperation remains essential in tackling crime.
