NANS has condemned the alleged mob killing of University of Jos student Ibrahim Mbaye over a missing iPhone, calling for justice and urging authorities to prosecute those responsible after three suspects were arrested.
The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the killing of Ibrahim Mbaye, a student of the University of Jos, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob over claims that he stole an iPhone.
In a statement released on Monday, NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde, described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, stressing that no accusation should result in mob action or any form of extrajudicial punishment. He said Mbaye was reportedly attacked by a group of people, publicly humiliated and confined in a room before he died, despite reports that the missing iPhone was never found in his possession.
Babatunde said the death of the student was a painful loss, adding that no one deserves to be subjected to such treatment without due process. He welcomed reports that security agencies had arrested some individuals in connection with the incident, noting that those responsible must face justice.
The student leader warned against taking the law into private hands, saying acts of jungle justice have no place in educational institutions or society. He urged students and Nigerians to reject mob violence and instead allow law enforcement agencies to investigate criminal allegations.
He also extended his condolences to Mbaye’s family, friends and the University of Jos community, praying that they find the strength to cope with the loss. Babatunde further called on security agencies to carry out a thorough, impartial and speedy investigation to ensure everyone involved in the student’s death is held accountable.
According to him, justice must not only be delivered but must also be seen to have been served, as this would discourage future acts of mob violence. He emphasised that no student should lose their life through jungle justice. Meanwhile, the Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the alleged killing.
