Kwara Varsity expels 87 Students over Robbery, Internet Fraud, Others

The Kwara State University , KWASU have been taking bold and strict steps recentl which will eventually standardize and put the school in good shape and form.

This time the university has expelled a total of 87 students from the university for their alleged involvement in robbery, internet fraud, examination malpractices and drug abuse in the last two sessions.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Mohammed Akanbi (SAN), disclosed this while briefing journalists ahead of the upcoming convocation ceremonies of the institution.

“Kwara State University has zero-tolerance for indiscipline and misconduct. All cases of indiscipline were investigated and appropriate punitive measures were taken against students found guilty of such offences. This is to ensure that the few bad eggs among students do not contaminate the decent ones.

“Between 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions, a total of 87 students were expelled from the university. Their expulsion followed investigation and establishment of their guilt by the Students Disciplinary Committee.” the VC said.

He called on the Nigerian government and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to make policies that will make student in tertiary institutions live on campus compulsory.

He said students are also vulnerably exposed to anti-social influences which are inimical to their health and academic career.

“Exposure to negative influence outside the university campus is majorly responsible for the involvement of some students in internet fraud, substance abuse and other untoward crimes.

“My administration is working very hard to reverse this trend. Accommodation for a greater percentage of our students on the university campus is one of the ways we envisage to solve the challenge,” he mentioned.

The VC also exposed that that some alledge commercial transporters “were serving as couriers for the sale and distribution of illicit drugs on the campus.”

While speaking about the combined convocation ceremony of the school, he disclosed that 6,620 students would be graduating with 3,864 for the 2019/2020 session and 2,756 for the 2020/2021 session from which 321 and 96 would be graduating with higher degrees from the two sessions respectively.
