ABU Zaria Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences holds first Herbal Medicine Conference

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in collaboration with Pan-Africana Strategic and Policy Research Group, Lagos, has organized the 1st Herbal Medicine National Scientific Conference.

The conference, with the theme; “Herbal Medicines: From Seeds to Products”, took place at the School of Postgraduate Studies Auditorium, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria today.

Being the first of its kind in the University, the conference had,in attendance, participants from different places across the world both physically and virtually.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, commended the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for the addressing issues of herbal and traditional medicine.

Prof. Bala wished all participants fruitful deliberations throughout the technical session.

Earlier in a welcome address, the Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Prof. Aliyu Muhammad Musa, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for their unwavering support towards the success of the conference.

Represented by the Deputy Dean, Prof. Mohammed Garba Magaji, the Dean thanked all participants and other invited guests for finding time to grace the occasion.

In a remark, the Chairman of the Occasion, Prof. Lawal A. Bichi, stated that Nigeria has so much in terms of herbal and traditional medicine, but little out of it.

Prof. Bichi noted that government agencies that have the responsibility of producing drugs using the available raw materials are not being productive.

He said due to the economic situation of the country, about 90 per cent of people with ailments in the country depend on herbal medicines.

The chairman said Nigeria is rich in terms of herbal resources, stressing that something needs to be done to fill the gap.

The event was attended by the members of the University Governing Council, led by the Chairman, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Raymond Bako; the Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila; the Bursar, Malam Bello Aminu Gurin; and the University Librarian, Dr. AbdulHamid Gambo Liman, among others.
