The federal government has released funds to settle overdue salaries for NASU members and pensions for retirees, ending a one-week strike that had halted university activities.

The federal government has disbursed funds to cover outstanding salaries owed to members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU) and pensions for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme, following NASU’s indefinite strike that began on October 28.
This move, announced by the Accountant General’s office on Saturday, November 2, follows NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) jointly halting university activities due to four months of unpaid salaries. NASU leaders had insisted universities would remain closed until the funds were released, affecting various university officials, including vice-chancellors and registrars.
The government’s action underscores its commitment to Nigerian workers’ and pensioners’ welfare, bringing much-needed relief to the affected university staff and retirees after months of waiting.
