On Monday, 16th March 2020, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared a two weeks warning strike to fight against the Integrated Payroll and Personnel System (IPPIS) imposed on them by the federal government. This was brought about after the federal government failed to pay salaries of lecturers who had not enrolled into the system.
ASUU believes that the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) is a better payment platform for them. They insist that it is corruption free unlike the IPPIS.
UTAS is a payroll system developed by ASUU. Mr Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU national president says it is more transparent and accountable.

He further explained that the information of all personnel will be uploaded into the system. This is the best way to ensure university autonomy because it will be resident in the university, but the government will have full access to monitor it.
In a meeting on Thursday, with the minister of education and minister of labour & employment, an agreement was reached – conditions are yet to be revealed. It is believed that this conditions will favour the merge of UTAS into IPPIS.
Another meeting is scheduled to take place either on Monday or Tuesday between the federal government and ASUU. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and await good news.
