The Benue Police clarified that during a military chase of armed suspects in Jato-Aka, stray bullets from a crossfire accidentally struck three students—killing one and injuring two—prompting an ongoing investigation amid community concerns over civilian safety during security operations.
The Police Command in Benue State has provided detailed clarification on the tragic incident that led to the death and injuries of several students in Jato-Aka, located in Kwande Local Government Area. This unfortunate event took place amidst a violent exchange of gunfire between military personnel conducting patrol operations and armed suspects believed to be criminals.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Udeme Edet, the students were not the intended targets of the military forces involved. The confrontation began when military troops, while on routine patrol, noticed armed men riding on a motorcycle. Upon spotting the suspects, the soldiers gave chase in an effort to apprehend them. In response, the suspects opened fire on the military personnel, which led the soldiers to return fire in self-defense. During the ensuing crossfire, stray bullets accidentally struck three students who happened to be nearby.
The wounded students were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, one of the students was declared dead upon arrival, while the other two sustained injuries but are currently reported to be in stable condition and receiving ongoing treatment. The police have promptly launched a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain all the details and ensure accountability.
This tragic occurrence has sparked significant concern among residents of Jato-Aka and the surrounding communities. Many locals have expressed fears over the safety of civilians—especially children—amidst continuing security operations in the area.
