Brilliant Nigerian Man Overcomes Four Years of Admission Delays to Become a Professor at U.S. University

Adekunle Aina overcame four years of admission delays, personal hardships, and multiple rejections to earn a PhD in Physics and become an Assistant Professor at California State University, inspiring others with his message of perseverance.

Adekunle Aina, a determined Nigerian man, faced four years of admission delays but persevered to achieve remarkable success, now serving as an Assistant Professor at California State University in the U.S.

Sharing his inspiring journey on LinkedIn, Adekunle revealed that despite graduating high school with seven distinctions, he struggled to gain admission, finally securing a spot in 2009 at the University of Lagos to study Applied Physics. His challenges continued as he lost his father in his first year, leaving him without food, housing, or parental support.

Although he nearly dropped out several times, Adekunle graduated in 2014 with First Class Honors, a rare achievement in his department. After facing rejections from universities abroad, he began a master’s program at the University of Lagos but later dropped out. Undeterred, he moved to Canada, where he earned a Master of Science in Physics from the University of Newfoundland with top honors and received a Lifetime Fellowship.

In 2018, Adekunle began his PhD at the University of British Columbia (UBC), becoming the first Black African-born person to earn a PhD in Physics at UBC in 2023 and the first in his family to achieve such a feat. Despite encountering numerous job rejections post-graduation, Adekunle secured a teaching position at Okanagan College before joining California State University as an Assistant Professor.

Through his story, Adekunle encourages others to persevere through hardships, emphasizing that challenges are temporary and persistence can lead to success.
