BUK Students to be Beneficiaries of ₦60 Million Scholarship Sponsored by Opay

BUK Students to be Beneficiaries of ₦60 Million Scholarship Sponsored by Opay

On Tuesday, 9th September 2025, OPay Digital Services Limited flagged off a groundbreaking ₦60 million scholarship programme for students of Bayero University, Kano—an initiative designed to ease financial burdens and inspire academic excellence.

The landmark partnership was sealed with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, on behalf of the University. The scholarship was made possible through the efforts of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) led by its President, Abdullahi Usman Baba, in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor hailed OPay for recognizing BUK as one of the beneficiaries of the life-changing programme. “This scholarship will go a long way in boosting the morale of our students. I urge the beneficiaries to use this opportunity wisely and OPay to sustain this generous gesture,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Itoro Udo, OPay’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, explained that the fintech giant—boasting over 16 million active users in Nigeria—is committed to empowering young people through education. He revealed that BUK is one of 20 Nigerian universities selected for the 10-year scholarship scheme, which will award ₦300,000 each to 20 students every year for the next decade.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar, described the intervention as “timely and highly impactful,” noting that many students face serious financial challenges in pursuit of their education.
