Cursory: Despite facing various challenges, Matthew Graham balanced his full-time job, family commitments, and studies at the University of Baltimore School of Law. He has since been sworn in as a licensed attorney in the State of Maryland Bar.

Matthew Graham, a resident of Baltimore, Maryland, is celebrating his remarkable achievement of passing the bar exam on his first attempt.
With an impressive score of 309 out of 400, his genuine and emotional reaction to the news went viral and garnered attention from national media.
Graham pursued his legal education at the University of Baltimore School of Law, overcoming various challenges along the way. Balancing a full-time job, his new role as a husband and father, and his studies, he used these commitments as motivation to persevere.
In a graduation ceremony, Graham proudly walked across the stage after completing law school one semester ahead of schedule.
He ranked 7th in his class, achieving an exceptional 3.6 GPA and receiving Magna Cum Laude honors. His hard work and dedication in preparing for the bar exam paid off when he scored 309, placing him in the 94th percentile.
Remarkably, he accomplished this feat on his first attempt, as most candidates reportedly take the exam multiple times to pass, with an average passing score of 266.
Graham’s emotional reaction to learning his bar exam score was captured in a video he shared on his Facebook page in April. The video gained national attention and resonated with many people.
“I understand how significant this is,” Graham told Essence. “Even ever since I passed the bar exam, when I would walk around, for example, today, walking around in the courthouse and you see Black staff or Black parents of other successful people who pass the bar, it’s just pride. They just smile.”
“We know how difficult it is for us to pass this exam. The barriers that are in our way, the bar exam, African Americans, we score the lowest on the bar exam historically. And I don’t think that it’s just enough to say, oh, it’s just because you guys didn’t work as hard or you guys aren’t as smart. No.
“There is a racial component there that makes our journey more difficult. So, it’s just a lot of pride knowing that regardless of what was put in my way, I was going to get this done,” he added.
Recently, Graham was officially sworn in as a licensed attorney in the State of Maryland Bar, solidifying his position as a qualified legal professional.
