Coronavirus: Ondo Assembly urges FG to declare state of emergency, tells Akeredolu to shutdown schools

The Ondo State House of Assembly has called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency in the health sector in a bid to combat the rising scourge of coronavirus in the country.

The lawmakers made the appeal during the plenary where the issue of the deadly virus was deliberated upon under matter of urgent public importance.

According to the Speaker of the state legislature, Bamidele Oleyelogun who reeled out the recommendations of the House, the state government must shut down schools, as well as religious gatherings.

The Assembly took the decision after an emergency briefing at the plenary by the state Commisioner for Health, Dr.Wahab Adegbenro.

“The best way to prevent this disease is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has also recommend high standard of hygiene.

We are recommending that all hoteliers should fumigate their environment and must make available sanitizers at their entry points.

“Federal Government should declare state of emergency in the health security as well to release fund for states in order to combat the deadly virus.

“Schools must also be closed as preventive measure for our children.”

Recall that a suspected case has been recorded in the state with the patient still under observation. The state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu will today address residents of the state over the development.
