The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) expelled 28 students for serious misconduct, revoked the certificates of 15 alumni, cleared nine students, warned 33 others, secured a ₦4 billion health intervention grant, and was approved for renaming to Yakubu Gowon University.

The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) has approved the expulsion of 28 students and revoked the certificates of 15 former students over serious disciplinary violations, following decisions reached at the institution’s 191st Senate meeting held on January 28, 2026.
The affected students were found guilty of offences including examination malpractice, theft, burglary, assault, cult-related activities, conspiracy, falsification of admission results, possession and use of hard drugs, as well as repeated failure to appear before the university’s disciplinary committee.
A statement issued on Sunday, February 22, by Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, explained that the decisions were based on investigations and recommendations by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC). While 28 students were expelled and 15 former students had their certificates withdrawn for ignoring multiple invitations, nine undergraduates were exonerated, and 33 others received warnings for infractions such as fighting, hostel racketeering, and conspiracy.
