Determined Nigerian Mother Earns First-Class Nursing Degree at UK University After Overcoming Setbacks

Nigerian mother Chisom Ibeanusi overcame academic setbacks and personal challenges to earn a first-class Nursing degree from the University of Derby, UK, with the unwavering support of her husband and a deep passion for caring for others.

Chisom Ibeanusi, a resilient young Nigerian woman and mother, has achieved a remarkable academic milestone by graduating with first-class honors in Nursing from the University of Derby, United Kingdom.

Chisom’s journey began in Nigeria, where she earned a Diploma in Nursing at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH). She later enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. However, persistent academic union strikes disrupted her studies and forced her to abandon the program in 2020.

Determined to continue her education, Chisom moved to the UK with her husband, Dr. Ejike Ibeanusi, who promised to support her in earning an international nursing degree. She soon enrolled in the University of Derby’s Nursing program, balancing motherhood, a full-time job, and her studies with relentless dedication.

Despite the challenges, Chisom graduated with distinction, attributing her success to her faith, her husband’s unwavering support, and her own perseverance. “My husband has been my backbone—managing the home, supporting my studies, and taking care of our baby despite his demanding career as a medical doctor,” she shared.

Her passion for nursing stems from a deep desire to care for vulnerable individuals. “Helping people through their most difficult moments and watching them regain their health is what drives me,” she said.

Reflecting on her interrupted education in Nigeria, Chisom expressed gratitude for the chance to start over and fulfill her dream abroad. “This first-class degree is just the beginning,” she affirmed, seeing her success as a stepping stone toward even greater achievements.
