Cursory: The NYSC, through its Corps Gender Vanguards, is actively addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and gender inequality in Nigeria. These trained volunteers raise awareness and support initiatives in rural areas. Gender Clubs in schools connect victims to support services, and the NYSC collaborates with stakeholders to promote gender mainstreaming and create an enabling environment for its work.

Brig.-Gen. Yushau Ahmed, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), emphasized that the NYSC is a prominent organization actively combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and gender inequality in Nigeria.
He made this declaration during the Nationwide Grassroot Gender Sensitization and Advocacy Campaign in Rural Communities in Bauchi. The NYSC has been engaged in the fight against GBV through its Corps Gender Vanguards, who have been equipped with the necessary skills to conduct awareness campaigns and provide support in rural areas.
The director general, represented by Rifkatu Yakubu, the Bauchi state Coordinator of NYSC, pointed out that this sensitization program was occurring simultaneously in all Northern states.
He also highlighted the role of the Corps Vanguards in establishing Gender Clubs in schools. These gender clubs play a crucial role in connecting victims of gender abuse with the GBV toll-free line (08031230651) provided by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.
He assured that NYSC would continue to work with relevant stakeholders toward the success of gender mainstreaming in the country and appealed to Nigerians to support the NYSC Gender Vanguard through the provision of enabling environment for greater impact.
“While gender issues are often misconstrued as affecting females alone, it is important to point out that they include matters of interest to both sexes, including rights and responsibilities.
“This informed the choice of the theme Gender Equality, Respect all and it is important to remind all and sundry that GBV is not only physical and psychological but also constitutes abuse of the fundamental human right of the victims.
“Consequently, all hands must be on deck to fight this ill that is ravaging the society, especially among the rural dwellers,” he said.
Previously, Aroni Sunday, the Head of the Reforms Unit at NYSC Headquarters, expressed that the timing of the program was particularly relevant as the global call for the protection of human rights is growing louder.
Represented by Aminu Ibrahim, Assistant Director of Deployment and Relocation at NYSC Bauchi, he conveyed appreciation to the NYSC management for their dedication to addressing issues of gender inequality, which prompted the need for this sensitization campaign.
“I wish to specially appreciate the Director-General for expressly granting approval for this event despite other competing demands for scarce resources,” he said.
