Final-year students at UNIZIK defied a university ban on the traditional “signing out” celebration, leading to viral footage of armed security removing them from campus and sparking outrage on social media.

Tensions flared at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka on Thursday as some final-year students openly defied a recent ban on the popular graduation ritual known as “signing out.”
A viral video, shared by Facebook user Okwa C. Ifugo, showed two female students being escorted off campus by armed security officers. The students were wearing shirts marked with celebratory messages—a common post-exam tradition now prohibited by the university.
Earlier in the week, the school administration issued an official directive, signed by Registrar Dr. Chinenye Okeke, banning the practice. The statement cited concerns about disruption, chaos, and occasional violence associated with the activity, which allegedly interferes with academic operations.
The circulating video captured stunned bystanders watching as security personnel enforced the directive.
