Ebonyi’s David Umahi Federal University made headlines as it expelled two students for exam malpractice, suspended eight for theft, and still rolled out the red carpet to welcome 990 freshers with big plans and new facilities.

David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, Ebonyi State, has expelled two students for exam malpractice and suspended eight others for theft, while also withdrawing three students over poor academic performance.
These disciplinary actions were announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jesse Uneke, during the university’s 4th matriculation ceremony, where 990 new students were officially admitted for the 2024/2025 academic session.
Prof. Uneke highlighted the university’s growth since its inception in 2021, now boasting a student population of 2,496 and offering advanced academic services like computer-based tests, online payments, and access to international research databases.
Addressing the fresh students, he stressed the importance of discipline, urging them to comply with university rules and actively participate in the two-week orientation program.
The Vice-Chancellor also revealed several completed and ongoing projects designed to improve the campus experience, including a nearly completed 1,799-capacity multipurpose auditorium, a 20-room professorial guest house, a fully furnished four-floor female hostel with 72 rooms, a two-floor male hostel nearing completion, and a new three-floor student laboratory and classroom complex.
DUFUHS has also launched a Renal Centre, an ultramodern Eye Centre, and a Cancer Centre to support research, training, and healthcare services. Additional plans are underway to expand hostels, boost internet connectivity, and install CCTV cameras for enhanced security.
Representing Ebonyi State Governor Chief Francis Nwifuru, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Grace Umezuruike, encouraged students to stay focused on their studies, avoid social distractions, and serve as worthy ambassadors of the university.
The governor commended the university’s leadership for maintaining high standards and reaffirmed support for DUFUHS’s vision of becoming a globally recognized institution, while also officially commissioning the new multipurpose laboratory complex.
